The Godfather

Lisa’s sister Sallie had a baby on Tuesday.  Her name is Elisabeth Kinsey.  How fitting.  When her husband, Matt, sent me a text with her picture, I was pumping gas.  Tears filled my eyes.  A man on the other side of the pumped glanced my way.  I felt I owed him an explanation – I’m sure he was thinking, “Why is this dude crying at the gas station?”

“The prices just keep going up,” I mumbled.

Matt called, “Did you see the picture?”

“Yep.  She’s beautiful!  Dark hair just like Lisa.”

She's more like Curie than Hilton.

I respect and love my sister-in law-immensely.  She is a mix between Marie Curie and Paris Hilton (not the really  bad parts of Hilton) – Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins and an M.D. from Harvard; jet set, shopper, on occasion a bit ditzy.  Sallie has a plan, a plan for life.  She planned her education, when she would get married, what her career would be and where, and pretty much when she’d have her kids.  Uncle Jesse and Matt’s sister, Terri, are the godparents for her son Sam.  Her plan was to ask Lisa and me to be Kinsey’s godparents.  That plan did not work out.

At Thanksgiving, Sallie and her husband Matt were heading to Wal-Mart and asked DJ and me if we wanted to go.  We agreed.  When we got back to the mountain house, Sallie said, “We have something we want to ask you. ”

I thought she was going to ask if Jesse wanted the NBA Jam Wii game for Christmas.  Instead she asked:

“We’d like you two to be Kinsey’s godparents.”

Another time that I was overcome with emotion.  Not only would this child have Lisa’s name, but she would also have DJ as her “fill in” godmother.  I’m not sure DJ understands the significance here.  It’s a really neat honor.

I am a godparent to one other kid.  I have to admit that I’ve fallen down on the job.  I did go to the christening.  That was it and she’s eleven years old now.

For Kinsey, I’m going to step it up.  Noisy presents on all her birthdays, inappropriate stories about her parents when she’s a teenager; candy, candy, candy.  And, I’m going to  love the heck out of her – just like I do with my girls!

  1. Another good one! And don’t worry — DJ will understand the significance eventually. Keep writing!

Congratulations to you and DJ. What an honor for you both. but what blessing for that little girl. My godmother truly became my fair godmother as I grew up. She made me feel special, defended me (to my parents no less) and loved me like no one else. No doubt you and DJ will make this baby feel the same way.

Your first goddaughter still loves you. I think she would rather live with you and the girls. Great article.

  6. I’m a graphic designer and have used the Madame Curie image on your blog in one of my designs as a comp for an Annual Report as a case study section in the report. Now I need to finalize the artwork, could you advise me on what are the copyrights for this image and how can my client obtain these for their report?

I have no idea. I just pulled the pic off the internet – Googled her and it was under images. Sorry I can’t be of more help.
